Pictures from Laos

In addition to school education, Angels for Children also supports extracurricular activities to promote the creative development of the children. During “activity time” every day between 3:00 – 4:00 pm, a wide range of activities are offered in the schools. In the art class, ten to 15-year-old students from the lower secondary school Ban Phang Heng can freely express their creativity with watercolours, coloured pencils, craft supplies and much more.

12 unique drawings have been selected to give the reader an insight into everyday life in Laos, culture and nature. Each drawing includes a description in Lao, English and German. We hope you enjoy reading this unique book!

THE EAGLE AND THE SNAKE A snake lies down in the grass to take a nap. An eagle flies in the sky looking for food. He looks down and searches the land. Suddenly it spots the snake. It changes direction and starts to descend. It catches the snake! The snake fights for its life. Poor snake. But that is the circle of life.

This is Maixe Her.

She is 14 years old and attends the fourth grade.

 

She lives in the village of Narsiew and to be an architect when she grows up.

MY BEAUTIFUL VILLAGE IN NATURE My village is as beautiful as in a dream or a fairytale. The wooden houses are big and strong. They are surrounded by meadows full of red, pink and orange flowers. A small path connects the two houses and leads to a turquoise waterfall and a pool. It is nice to jump into the cold water on a hot day. When I have finished this text, I want to relax happily in the shade of the big tree.

THE TIGER The tiger is a big and dangerous animal. In former times many tigers lived in the jungle, but now people worry, they could become extinct. Therefore, people bring it to the zoo and feed it.

MY FAMILY’S GARDEN My family has a big garden behind our house. We plant vegetables for our whole family because then we don‘t have to buy anything from the market. That is good for us and our health because our vegetables are fresh and unsprayed. We plant chili, garlic, onions, tomatoes and water spinach (morning glory). “Morning glory” is called „phak bong“ in Lao.

THE TEMPLE IN LAOS Every Laotian village has, depending on its size, one or more temples. These are very colourful, usually with lots of gold and yellow. They are a place of worship and respect for Buddhists. Monks and novices, typically dressed in orange and yellow, live in the temples. Every morning they wander through the streets of the villages to collect their breakfast and lunch in form of alms. There is no dinner. The rest of the day is spent in the temples praying.

Every morning at six o‘clock I get up to help my mother water the garden. Then I leave for school. When I get home from school, I help my mother with the housework and we water the garden again. These are my daily tasks. I am really happy with my life. And when I grow up, I want to become a doctor because I want to take care of my parents and other people. This is my dream for the future.

Next to the stilt houses were fields of flowers, a garden full of vegetables and a small pond. Behind the pond grew a large palm tree carrying delicious coconuts. Wide rice fields surrounded the village and in the distance, you could see the mountains.

But the small village grew quickly and life became more difficult because there was not enough food for everyone. So they moved to the lowlands to live together with other ethnic groups: the Lao Loum, the Lao Theung and the Lao Soung.

DOK CHAMPA „Dok mai“ is the Laotian word for flower. „Dok Champa“ is the national flower of Laos. There are many different kinds of „Dok Champa“, but the most famous one is white with yellow. Others are red, pink or orange, as can be seen in the picture. Laotian women wear the “Dok Champa” flower in their hair and also as a flower chain around their neck on special occasions - especially the Laotian New Year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR Christmas is a Christian holiday. Christians celebrate the birth of the Son of God, whose name is Jesus. At Christmas you usually spend a lot of time with your family to celebrate. It is a happy day! Some families go to church to hear the story of Jesus‘ birth. There is a lot of food and people give presents to each other. Almost every family has a Christmas tree. This is a fir tree with many lights and colorful decorations. Parents put presents under the Christmas tree and their children are very excited about it!

My grandparents live in a farmhouse that is far away from my village - about 1 km. But my brother and I often visit our grandparents on their farm, because we like it there and we want to see the nature in its beautiful green colour. My grandfather‘s farm is surrounded by mountains and there is a river with cold water coming down the mountains. The vast fields are green and beautiful.

GARDEN FULL OF FLOWERS In the garden there are many colorful flowers. They are so beautiful that the butterflies come to drink the sweet nectar from the flowers. It looks yummy!
